The New Caledonian Giant Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus), also known as "Leachie," is the largest species of gecko in the world, with some adults reaching lengths of up to 14 inches (35 cm) including the tail. Native to the islands of New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific, these geckos are known for their impressive size, unique appearance, and diverse coloration, which ranges from various shades of brown, green, and gray to pink or lavender. They exhibit intricate patterns of stripes, blotches, and spots, making each individual gecko unique. In the wild, their size and camouflage help them blend seamlessly with the mossy, lichen-covered trees of their native rainforests, allowing them to avoid predators and ambush prey.

New Caledonian Giant Geckos are arboreal and nocturnal, spending most of their time in trees and emerging at night to hunt. They are omnivorous, consuming a varied diet that includes insects, smaller lizards, fruit, and nectar. They are also known for their territorial behavior and distinctive vocalizations, which range from growls and barks to low-frequency, almost guttural sounds used to communicate and establish dominance. In captivity, they are valued for their unique personalities; some individuals can be quite docile and tolerate handling, while others may remain defensive or aggressive. This species is particularly fascinating due to its long lifespan—some can live up to 20-30 years in captivity—making them a long-term commitment for reptile enthusiasts.
