Gargoyle Geckos, named after the grotesque stone figures often found perched on historic buildings, are a fascinating species of gecko native to the southern part of New Caledonia. This species, scientifically known as *Rhacodactylus auriculatus*, is particularly noted for its 'horned' appearance, featuring bony knobs or ridges above their eyes that resemble the horns of a gargoyle. These geckos exhibit a wide range of colors and patterns, including shades of gray, orange, red, and white, with some individuals also displaying mottled patterns or reticulated designs. The skin texture of Gargoyle Geckos is somewhat rougher compared to other geckos, enhancing their camouflage against the bark and leaves of their natural habitat.

In addition to their distinctive appearance, Gargoyle Geckos are known for their resilient nature. They are capable of regenerating their tails, a common trait among many gecko species, which they can drop as a defensive mechanism to distract predators while they escape. Unlike some geckos, Gargoyle Geckos do not have adhesive toe pads, so they are not as adept at climbing smooth surfaces but excel in navigating the more textured environments like tree bark or rocks. They are primarily nocturnal and spend the daylight hours hiding in tree trunks or foliage. Gargoyle Geckos are also omnivorous, with a diet in captivity often consisting of commercial fruit blends and live insects. These adaptable reptiles are relatively easy to care for in captivity, making them popular pets among reptile enthusiasts, especially those who appreciate their striking and somewhat mythical appearance.
